The Benefits of Spaying and Neutering Your Pet
April 28, 2025
Dr. Dianne Clark
Spaying (for females) and neutering (for males) are among the most common surgeries we perform at Sharon Veterinary Clinic. Beyond preventing unwanted litters, these procedures offer significant health and behavioural advantages.
Health benefits
- Females — Eliminates the risk of pyometra (a life-threatening uterine infection) and dramatically reduces the risk of mammary cancer when done before the first heat cycle.
- Males — Prevents testicular cancer and reduces the risk of prostate problems.
Behavioural benefits
Neutered males are often less likely to roam, mark territory, or show aggression related to mating instincts. Spayed females won't go into heat, avoiding the associated behaviours and mess.
When to schedule
The ideal timing depends on your pet's species, breed, and size. We recommend discussing the best age for your individual pet during a wellness visit.
